It's hard to believe the way things were only 42 years ago. When people think of the good ol' Leave it to Beaver days, they seldom remember the ignorance and bigotry that was so prevelant back then.
At the same time, I think if King were still alive, he would say there is still a long way to go. I am continually amazed at how much racism - both structural and blatant - still exists, despite the progress made. Sometimes it seems people point to the Civil Rights movement as evidence that everything has been fixed.
I think Katrina, among other things, has shown us that us that King's dream still exists somewhere in the future.
